New Adventures In Orchestration

  • 6
Stimulating Jazz & Modern Classical Arrangements
For
Big Band,
Large Ensemble, And Orchestra
Friday, July 13, 2012

Alright, let's be honest. Technically speaking, not all of these pieces can be classified as new. The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, Nick Rosen, and the Ferguson/Nino Chamber Ensemble are among the most recent contributors of fresh and exciting orchestral jazz charts within the lot below. Others like Stewart Copeland (formerly of the Police), Chris Bowden, Muhal Richard Abrams, and Colin Towns have all been working somewhat under the radar in this arena for some time now. Meanwhile the works by Cannonball Adderley and Oliver Nelson, Charles Mingus, Frank Zappa and the remainder date as far back as the mid-1960's and prior. I must also admit that many of these pieces are not by any stretch of the imagination among the most daring of arrangements to be found within the vast world of music, but they are certainly in the company of the most evocative; a musical roller coaster ride through jazz and jazz inspired modern classical orchestrations. While each composition within 'New Adventures' can stand on its own as a thoughtful, formidable and stimulating exercise in charting for a large ensemble, when taken as a whole, the resulting aural experience begins to resemble something of a strange and mystifying dreamscape, the sort where incongruous images and emotions meld together in a kaleidoscopic tapestry that vacillates between fantasy and reality; simultaneously playful and demanding, loopy and provocative, comforting and ominous. Intended as a three part suite, a triad of entertaining sets are available below for your listening pleasure. Collect them all.

Thank you, Miles. I'm always finding new music (to me) here. My favourite post is still "Deep Below The Waters Surface" which introduced me to Gavin Briars. Recently got to see him performing The Sinking Of The Titanic, at Birmingham Town Hall, and it was really magical. All because of BWBW. Thank you, Tony.

Anonymous Tony...

Yours is exactly the type of comment that I love to hear. I'm happy to have introduced you to Gavin Bryars, and am very pleased that you followed through by actually going to see and hear him perform in concert. BWBW is here only to share the things I know and love with the hope that others like yourself and Argantonio (above) will discover something that inspires you as much as it has me.

Cheers.

I think I'm going to enjoy discovering all this as it's all quite new to me.
Apparently Gil Evans does not fall within your ambit here? Or his protege Maria Schneider?

Indeed they do, but there are certain unfortunate limitations within my library. A necessitated purge of my record collection last year due to monetary hardship has left a number of glaring holes within my library. Maybe next time.

Thanks so much Miles.
I had found your Zappa montages almost a year ago & had not had occasion to give them a listen them until I was on a road trip from Allentown to Kansas City last April.

At that point, they were absolutely perfect! Chunks of Zappa, from his entire official catalog + known extras + some new bonus elements that I had not know of.

Just premiere!

So now I have grabbed 'New Adventures in Orchestration

& somewhere along the way I grabbed the Rundgren. I do favor his "all that synthesized noise" period.

keep up the good work
