Play It Short, Fast And Loud!
Friday, August 10, 2012

This particular music mix is one that I first put together and shared back in May of 2008. A few years later in 2010, I pulled it out again and featured it a second time simply because I liked it so much, as apparently did a few others. On both of those occasions there was a short story that accompanied the music, but that narrative has no doubt run its course so there's no need to reprint it once again. If you'd still like to read it however, you can find it here.

Anyway, after that second go-round with this set, I sorta forgot about it and tucked it away. But recently I came across it buried beneath a pile of soiled T-shirts, dirty socks and some empty candy wrappers. I decided to revisit it and after listening to the music once again with refreshed ears, I was reminded of just how much fun this music is/was/will always be despite its sometimes nihilistic stance. Long story short, I decided to share it in these pages one last time. After all, my readership has no doubt changed somewhat over the 4½ years that I've been publishing Birds With Broken Wings (and hopefully has grown a bit too), so I figure that this time 'round it'll probably reach an entirely new audience of ears. Not to imply that's its new music however. It's not. The set's comprised primarily of punk and new wave sounds from the late 1970's along with a few of the music's pioneering Godfathers thrown in for good measure. With regard to the latter, we're talking about bands and musicians who pre-dated the era. Groups like the mid-60's Who and Kinks, two acts that shared much in common with the X Generation. We're also talking the MC5 whose full-on sonic assault easily came a full decade earlier. And then of course there's Little Richard who in my opinion was punk long before there was an attitude or music called punk. A wild man was he, and a pretty daring act for the time in which he was making his early hits.

So if you haven't checked out 'Short, Fast And Loud!'
previously, then give it spin. And if you already have, I've added a handful of extra tracks as an enticement for you to visit it again. Either way it's a great set for warm weather and driving fast out on the open road, ideally played loud. REALLY LOUD.
